Hello, Could you please advise how to add a USB Country Code to Custom Defaults? Apparently this parameter is not processed correctly after Write To Custom Defaults and cannot be retrieved after Set Defaults (unit cold booted to ensure custom values are applied) A Country Code is considered as a value needed in Custom Values. reproduction: - we used direct USB cable connection - set scanner to Factory Defaults - scan a bar code with digits to a Notepad (you should get digits) - scan a bar code French Windows from USB chapter in PRG - scan the bar code with digits to a Notepad (you should get symbols) - Write to Custom Defaults - cold boot MT device - scan the bar code with digits to a Notepad (you should get symbols) - to confirm that we still have French - scan a bar code English Windows from USB chapter in PRG - scan a bar code with digits to a Notepad (you should get digits) - scan Set Defaults - scan a bar code with digits to a Notepad (you should get symbols BUT YOU GET DIGITS) - cold boot does not restore French settings thank you Pavel

I agree, if I remember correctly, it was MC50 where we say this before. I also agree that this issue is combination of both hardware (PC and terminal). However, from my experience, some customers do not want to pay attention to it and want Motorola products to be 'ideal'.

We understand that the dongle prevents spikes getting through to a PC. What would be difficult to sell to customers is that they would need to invest extra costs to already installed terminals and they may raise a point ' who will pay it or who will pay their damaged PCs?'. Customer understand that MT is working same way as any other Motorola terminal and they would not expect unexpected behavior. Obviously, we cannot warn customer before he buys the MT that this could happen as we would probably won't sell it. However telling him this after he buys the MT put emphasis on Motorola to find a solution and who will pay it. My intention is to prevent all this happening and giving a customer a 'nice and clean' device. (also making our sales and service guys live easier) I understand that based on current situation customer may accept the dongle without questions, but conditions for such situation are unpredictable as well as customer's reaction. (In certain situation customer may understand the MT as unreliable product for his solution)

One thing I remeber is that the dongle use is not specific to MT. It was first introduced in MCD for some other products. The issue might not be solely the device. It might be a combination, which includes a PC with weaker ESD protection of the USB port. Just my 2 cents. EE engineer would have better opinion on this.

Hi Mike, USB ESD dongle sounds good as a workaround. I am afraid that customers will not agree with this as solution as the electrical spikes may damage their computers. My colleague already blew up USB ports on his PC and cannot use them any more. Would it be possible to ensure the unit itself does not exceed levels which may affect PCs which does not have the USB lines properly saved against ESD or spikes? thank you, Pavel

I do not disagree - I will forward you concern the EE on the program.

I don't understand Pavel's comment:

I am afraid that customers will not agree with this as solution as the electrical spikes may damage their computers. My colleague already blew up USB ports on his PC and cannot use them any more.

The dongle prevents this.

Hi All, I can duplicate the same behavior as Pavel. I was able to duplicate on two MT's that before the patch this did not work and then after applying the patch I have to scan set defaults twice before the custom file works. Also now if I scan set factory defaults it seems to be stuck in the last programmed mode. So, I scanned in set default (2xs- reads in customer file) which set it to French, I verified in notepad, scanned in set factory default and it still outputs data in French. Also, I duplicated the same issue with having my device set as HID keyboard connected using the USB cable direct then changing to activesync mode and I got a blue screen on my laptop and it rebooted.

Regarding the spikes from the device over the USB cable.  This is a known issue.  The HW guys have recommended a USB ESD dongle attached between the ActiveSync cable and the PC.

I'll see if I can find the exact part information.

I think that the part number is the following -> USB ESD adapter 50-12700-115

Hi Pavel, There is a hot fix ( http://support.symbol.com/support/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=k…) that corrects an issue reported about writing to custom defaults. It might be worth loading this patch on to see if it corrects the issue you are having. Take  Care, Amy

Hi Amy, I have applied ADCservices.dll version 1.0.0.21. It is now working, but after scanning Set Defaults, the custom values with French Windows USB is not applied. If I scan Set Defaults for second time, then French Windows is applied. Could you please verify you see the same? Apart of this, it looks like there might be some electrical spikes from terminal over USB cable. After applying above fix, I wanted to make sure the DLL was successfully updated. I have switched from HID to ActiveSync in Home Application. During the switching procedure, my HP laptop was booted with a blue screen. I thought it was just random issue, but when I tried second time, the blue screen and laptop reboot appears as well. When I did the same on desktop PC, there was no problem at all. This is only information - so far no customer report this.
