LS3408 on VC5090 vs. LS3408 on LXE VX4

I have a customer who is piloting our VC5090 use instead of the current LXE VX4 that they are using.  They have our LS3408ER on both the VC5090 and the LXE unit. They are seeing a range of 13 - 14 feet using the LS3408ER on the LXE VX4, but only a range of 10 - 11 feet using the LS3408ER on the VC5090.  They have swapped the scanners between the VC5090 and the LXE VX4 and continue to see the same results.  They have scanned the "alternate angle" barcode, but continue to get more distance on the LXE than on our 5090. Any ideas on what to try next would be greatly appreciated.

I just spoke with one of our electrical engineers and may have found the root cause of the issue you are seeing.  The problem could be that the Motorola VC5090 does not do as good of a job with filtering out the noise from the power supplied by the fork-lift battery (which is very noisy).  If there is more noise on the power rails from the Motorola VRC than the LXE VRC, this will definitely cause a reduction in scanning range (because this noise gets passed through to the laser signal).  You should speak with Juliet Chon in mobile computing to see if their group ever did any benchmarking studies against LXE on noise levels on the power outputs off fork-lift batteries. Apparently this has been indicated that this is a “known” issue with the Toyota trucks because they convert DC to AC to drive the electric motors. 

The model number of the Toyota Fork trucks are;  7FBCU25, 7FBEHU18, 7FBEU20

 

Models 5FBE15 and 5FBE20 are also thought to have the issue but have not been tested ( currently no VMU's installed) the three 7 series models have the issue.

 Attached is a document with a part number for a Toyota approved capacitor that will address the issue.

Try to connect the LS3408ER to a laptop and see how far it decodes comparing to VC5090 and LXE VX4.

Can you run a apples to apples comparison?? This would be both units plugged into AC power. This will help in finding if it's a interference issue. What type of Lift truck is it? (make and model) I've seen Toyota go to a newer DC to AC converter causing inconsistent scanning behavior. ie..partial scan data ,Slow data decode,ER range cut in half .ect...

Both devices are on the same type of strand-up fork-lift. The barcodes are on thermal transfer paper and 34 mil. I have attached two examples that they sent to me.

I am the product manager for the LS3408-ER and there are few questions that need to be answered to try to troubleshoot this problem: 1)  Is the fork-lift used in both situations exactly the same?   2)  If they are not the same, then one could be using an AC engine that causes electro-magnetic interference, which affects the scan range. 3)  Suggestion, turn off the fork-lift truck completely and re-run the test.  The vehicle mount terminal should not have any effect on the scan performance of the laser. 4)  What is the barcode type, density and is the barcode paper or retro-reflective? - Did you call the support center and ask them for help?
