Chapter 2 – Getting Ready to Manage Zebra Printers -- 9 When planning for Zebra Printer management, certain network configuration for the Zebra Printers should be identified so the MSP Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In can communicate with the Zebra printers. The network configuration of the Zebra printers consists of their IP addresses, their UDP port value, and their TCP port value. The UDP and the TCP port values should be the same for all the Zebra printers that are to be managed via the same Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In. The PC that contains the MSP Windows PC Client and the Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In should be on the same network as the Zebra printers. Can someone explain what the limitations are regarding the printer and the proxy pc having to be on the same network?  Same subnet or just not across WAN? Thanks

We have only tested and can only officially recommend using the Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In on the SAME SUBNET as the Zebra Printers to be managed.  That said, it clearly CAN work when they are on different subnets, subject to the configuration of the routers that route traffic between the subnets. The Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In originates TCP traffic to Zebra Printers on a defined TCP Port.  That traffic MUST be routed for it to work.  Similarly, the Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In must be able to successfully ICMP ping Zebra Printers in order for discovery to work properly.  So, ICMP traffic from the Zebra Printer MSP Proxy Plug-In  to Zebra Printers must be routed for it to work. Of the two, ICMP traffic may well NOT be routed between subnets as part of the standard configuration of many routers.  If you are contemplating placing the Zebra Printers on a different subnet than the Zebra printers to be managed, then you should ensure that the routing of ICMP traffic is enabed by verifying and/or modifying the configuration of applicable routers.

I have a configuration that has the printers on the same network in a store. The printers are on a different subnet than the proxy but are routed by the switch and it works.
