AirDefense and frequency jamming

In a past installation of AirDefense in the Athens International Airport (Greece), the Independent Authority for the Privacy of Communications did not allow the use of the product at full scale as they claim that it can be used for frequency jamming or communication distortion and that is against the law. Thus the product is solely used for monitoring and no protection mechanism (termination etc) is allowed. Has anybody come across a similar situation in your country? What papers/certifications can we provide to overcome this issue? Thanks in advance.

It is common for customers to be concerned about usingAirDefense in a way that would violate the laws of the regulatory body in the regionthey are operating.   When implementing termination or activeblocking of a 802.11 based connection the AirDefense system will only allowactive transmission on legal frequencies for the region it the sensor is in.  The termination technology does not implementRF-Jamming but rather very target mitigation against specific devices.  Additionally it will prevent termination ofthose devices which aren’t explicitly known to be sanctioned or connected tothe sanctioned network thus ensuring when communication is “distorted” it isonly against traffic going to or from the protected network.  Neighboring networks will never be impactedby this termination activity.  Thus customersare able to implement this because they are protecting the networks and deviceswhich they own and have control over. The specific laws around our specific technology are vague but normallyinterpreted as legal because it is not harming any communication with unknown/neighboringdevices.  As the laws don’t specifically addressthis we cover our termination technology it isn’t possible to become “certified”and are handled on a case by case bases working with the customers legaldepartment to address the concerns they have.

Additionally the system implements two other forms ofmitigation which do not rely on active transmission over the air and are notpart of a regulatory consideration.  Thesemethods are ACL and Port suppression and can be used to address many of the concernsthe Airport may have.
