Looking for guidance on the following customer inquiry:
MC9090-GK0HJEFR65S -
Motorola Symbol MC9090-G RFID Mobile Computer (Gun-Style), WLAN (802.11 a/b/g) Radio, 2D Pico Imager, 3.8" QVGA Color Touchscreen, 64MB RAM/128MB Flash, 53-Key Alpha-Numeric Keypad, Audio/Voice/Bluetooth, Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 Pro Question:
Customer DEVICE IS CLASS1 DIV 2 CLASSIFIED, DOES THIS APPLY WITH BATTERY CHANGE OUTS? CAN BATTERY CHANGE OUT OCCUR IN HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS? Our handhelds as well as Motorola Radios are intrinsically safe for Class 1 Div 2 service. We are validating that this does include the same classification for battery change outs as well as doing Cold reboots on the Motorola 9090 handheld computers. This involved situations where explosive possibilities from vapors which is the same situations that we could just have the Motorola handhelds or radios in at any given time. We are a chemical plant that requires Class 1 Div 2 requirements for our equipment and need to insure whether we are good with radio battery removal.

Finally got an answer from 2 different sources. The customer must be advised never to ever change or replaced the battery within a known hazardous environment. They must remove themselves and the device from the hazardous location before commencing to make the battery change. This type of information is readily included within the user guide and also on the terminal label. The warning message is part of the certification we receive from UL.
No, it is not safe to remove a battery on an MC9090 RFID device in a C1D2 certified/hazardous environment. UL requires a marking on CID2 MC90XXs with the statement “WARNING - Explosion Hazard - Batteries must only be changed or charged in an area known to be non-hazardous” or equivalent.
Any feedback/thoughts on this? Is it safe to remove a battery on a MC9090 RFID device in a C1D2 certified/hazardous environment? My thoughts are, it is always advisable to replace batteries outside of any hazardous environment. But if you need to replace them, you have to make sure that the end users strictly follow the proper battery removal, which is Suspend the device first, wait for a few seconds and then remove the battery.
Just need our Moto C1D2/C1D1/harzardous env experts to agree on this before I send this info to the customer.
