Hi everyone, A new RS507 firmware is being released for field installation to address the iOS virtual keyboard issue. There are no current plans to release this firmware to the factory, however it can be flashed on the RS507 in the field using the PC Tool (embedded with latest firmware package on Support Center). To those that were not familiar with the issue, here is a description of the issue and explanation of the solution.
The problem:
RS507 connects to iOS devices (iPhone, iPad,…) in HID profile, as an external keyboard, hence, disabling the iOS virtual keyboard.
The solution:
RS507 has to send the “eject key” to enable the virtual keyboard. It will send the "eject key" in two scenarios:
First scan after connection is established.
Short press on the ‘Restore key’ when the RS507 is connected. Similar to the functionality provided by “Scanfob® 2002” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uRlIw5H0wE)
We enhance the RS507 “Restore key” to send “eject key” event to the iOS device, whenever the user press on it. The “eject key" is sent only if the RS507 is paired and connected, and in response to a short ( 5 seconds) press. (A long press >5 seconds will warmboot the RS507).
The “eject key” is a toggle key, meaning, first time it is sent, it will bring up the virtual keyboard, second time it will remove the virtual keyboard, and so on.
If the virtual keyboard is not in use on the iOS device, when the “eject key” is sent, the "eject key" event will be lost.
The virtual keyboard has to be in use by the foreground application (e.g. Note, e-mail, search) for the iOS to respond to the “eject key” and bring up the virtual keyboard. Untill this firmware is released on Support Center, it is available from me for testing upon request when combined with few details on the opportunity : Name of customer, number of units, expected book date and ship date. I would welcome a 3rd party showing it with iPad on Youtube.
The RS507 firmware with iOS support is released for field upgrade to qualified customers on Support Center.
That is great to hear but would it be possible to show it on a video with the actual RS507 paired with iOS devices ? Customers are trying to search the internet and have read reviews that the RS507 is incompatible with iOS devices. When we tell then that it is fixed by firmware upgrade, they still have some doubts.
