ActiveSync Security

We have a Federal Governement customer who will be using MC 9090s in a batch mode to collect data in the field.  When the user returns to the P.C where they will transfer the data, the customer intends to use ActiveSync to do the data transfer.

A security issue has come up, however.  The customer is very concerned that while the MC 9090 is connected to the P.C. via ActiveSync, the user could inadvertently or maliciously add, modify, or delete files or configurations.  The customer will not deploy the MC 9090s until this issue is resolved. Is there a way of restricting ActiveSync to do data transfer only?  If not, is there a third-party product that will do just data transfer? Thanks. Mario

Vijay, The customer manager wants the user of the MC 9090 to be able to transfer collected data from the MC 9090 to the P.C. via ActiveSync.  But he does not want the user to be able to change any of the files or configurations on the MC 9090 or be able to transfer any files from the P.C. to the MC 9090. Mario, Sorry for the delay in replying, after exploring for couple of solutions, i felt that making a filesystem as read only would be dangerous,as many apps and windows services would be accessing the FS at any given point of time. One solution we can think of is disallowing the user (ActiveSync) to access the file by restricting the permissions and hiding the file. or place the critical data file in \windows\Appdata folder.   Thanks, Vijay

Hi Mario, Sorry if i've not understood your query properly. could you please clarify this: does the customer wants a read only  mode for the data available in the device(does it mean he dont want to write/modify back data on the device) ? Thanks, Vijay
