Changes to Android Device Setup Process Due to Google’s Privacy Policy Updates

In today’s fast-evolving digital landscape, privacy concerns and regulations are becoming increasingly significant. With this in mind, we want to share an important update regarding the out-of-box setup process for Android devices, prompted by Google’s revised privacy policies.

Previous Setup Process

Until recently, setting up an Android Mobile Computer was a seamless experience for organizations. The setup process allowed for the optional bypassing of all Android setup wizard screens. This included the automatic acceptance of privacy terms and conditions on behalf of the organization, effectively streamlining device setup.

What’s Changing?

In compliance with Google’s latest guidelines, we’ve had to make adjustments to the device setup process when using Zebra tools. This change mandates the manual acceptance of privacy terms and conditions during the device setup phase. It’s important to note that all Android device manufacturers must adhere to Google’s updated privacy policy.

What This Means for Partners and Customers

Workflow Change

When scanning a setup barcode created by StageNow or Zebra DNA Cloud, the person setting up the device will now encounter each screen of the Android setup wizard. Manual navigation through each screen is required before the device staging process can be completed.

Impact

This updated requirement introduces additional steps during device staging. As a result, both customers and partners will need to modify their device setup processes to accommodate this change. Here are the screens that will require manual interaction as part of the device setup using Zebra tools:

By completing these initial setup steps, the individual performing the setup confirms they are authorized to act on behalf of the end user. Furthermore, they affirm that the end user agrees to Google’s terms of service, including its privacy policy.

Conclusion

While these changes may initially seem like an added complexity, they are a crucial step towards maintaining compliance with privacy standards and ensuring that end users are fully informed and consenting participants in their device’s setup process. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adapting to these new procedures.
