have a customer using MSP2.9, they report that the /var/log dierctory on their box is gone. does anyone know if there is anything critical stored in this directory that they should worry about or try to re-create? My first thoguht was if /var/log is gone, I'd be concerned what else has happened to the system! thanks, afshin

Can't be good if its not there. Is there a link to where the log folder is? Such as /var/lib/log? If you do "ls -l" in /var what do you see? Otherwise, yeah if it's not there then probably not a good thing. Are they reporting a specific issue or just noticed it wasn't there?
Folders in Linux don't just disappear. First thing to do if you think something strange is going on with a linux filesystem is run fsck (file system consistency check) to see if you have disk corruption problems.
If you try to recreate it, which would be good idea, you will need to recreate all the subfolders and be sure to set ownership and permissions carefully. John, do you have an MSP2 server you could look at and tell Afshin what the tree looks like on your box? If you could send him the output of "ls -lR \var\log" that should allow the folder to be re-created.
