Have you tried the MC75A0 or MC55A0 with the DL focusing in the SE4500? In healthcare we must read extremely small barcodes on the small single-syringe dose medicine bottles and required this DL focusing. They are not EAN, but I think you should definitely try it on your symbols also. Be sure all the parameters are enabled correctly too.
I was talking to one of my resellers yesterday and he encountered a similar problem, but it was with reading one of the barcodes on the MC65 box. He advised that he spoke with support and they confirmed this behavior and recommended a HD imager.
